Choosing a vendor is less about the lowest quote and more about risk: who owns the code, how changes are approved, and what happens when you need urgent fixes after launch.
Demand a written scope
Page list, integrations, content responsibility, timeline, and payment milestones should be documented. Verbal promises do not survive staff turnover on either side.
Insist on staging and version control
You should review work on a staging URL before production. Source code in a repository you can access (or escrow) prevents lock-in.
Clarify SEO and content ownership
Some agencies deliver design only; others include metadata, schema, and analytics. Know who writes long-form service copy and who maintains it after go-live.
